On My Bookshelf : Recommended Reading

"Garbage In - Garbage Out." This was the mantra of my very first computer programming instructor way back in junior high school. The basic idea is that a computer program is only as good as the person who wrote it. The instructor was one of those people who vigorously defended the computer whenever there was a question of who to blame. In retrospect, it's funny that this ideology is probably the root of so many usability problems where the developer/programmer/etc. believes that the user is always to blame. Although I don't believe that it is incumbent upon users to know everything, I do believe the G.I.G.O. idea. To that end, here is a list of some of the garbage that I've been feeding myself.
